How to Build Visibility When Your Mission Feels Uncomfortable | Jenna Scherma

Jenna Scherma co-founded Learn Mobile after concluding that the problem with sex education was not the curriculum that exists, but how uncomfortable adults are delivering it. She studied human sexuality and computer science at NYU, and built a platform that lets schools, youth organizations and clinics choose what they teach rather than accepting a single fixed program.

How to Build Visibility as a Founder in a Controversial Space

Jenna started pitching publicly for a specific reason: she wanted feedback, from as many different rooms as possible. Every pitch put her in front of a different community, a different political context, a different set of objections, and each one taught her how to adapt the message without abandoning it. She describes the process as exposure therapy that also happened to cure her fear of public speaking.

The pushback has been almost entirely online. In person, across home school communities, religious communities and states with restrictive guidelines, she reports no resistance. The internet is a different environment, and she is direct about what it costs: hateful comments, the occasional accusation, and the constant work of separating criticism of her actual position from criticism of what people assume it is. Her counterweight is the data. For every hostile comment, roughly eighty people share and support.
