When Norman and I boarded our flight out of Newark, the friendly flight attendant casually asked us where we were headed. A bit perplexed by what seemed like an obvious question, we looked at each other before she explained, “Well, for most people, Charlotte is a connecting point.” Oh! Smiling, we clarified, “No, our destination is Charlotte.” This delightful interaction perfectly sets the stage for this piece. We want to share our experience, highlight why you should consider extending your layover to a three-day stay, and uncover Charlotte’s vibrant charm beneath its wings.
Charlotte Douglas International Airport is a central hub with numerous international connections. It is a pivotal gateway for travelers flying between North America and destinations in Europe, South America, and the Caribbean. Flights from cities like London, Munich, and Cancun often schedule layovers in Charlotte, making the town an excellent stopover choice for international travelers.
Imagine touching down in a city that lets you savor Southern hospitality and culinary style, all while adjusting to new time zones. Charlotte welcomes you to unwind, explore, and perhaps, like us, fall slightly in love with its warm, inviting spirit. Instead of just passing through, why not take the time to experience the soul of the South in this dynamic and culturally rich city?
Day 1: Southern Charm and Historical Walks
Our first day in Charlotte began with a hearty lunch at Church and Union, where I dove into a delicious plate of shrimp and grits—a quintessential Southern dish that set the perfect tone for our city adventures. The rich and comforting flavors instantly immersed me in the local vibe.
With satisfied appetites, we started on a self-guided walking tour through the Historic Fourth Ward. The day was gorgeous, perfect for leisurely wandering through the charming Victorian streets. We took our time, soaking in the beautiful architecture and lush gardens and even striking up conversations with fellow explorers equally captivated by the neighborhood’s allure.

Our explorations led us to the majestic Grand Bohemian Hotel, where we stepped inside to marvel at the stunning art installations adorning the lobby and the Mico Restaurant. The 16th floor boasts more art with the Búho Bar. With its creative decor and luxurious ambiance we’ve bookmarked this location for our next visit—a ‘pin it’ moment for plans.

Then we headed to the open spaces of Freedom Park. Known as “Charlotte’s Central Park,” this beautiful area offered us serenity and the perfect place to relax amid nature. We leisurely strolled around its serene lake, enjoying the sunny afternoon and perhaps a refreshing ice cream from one of the nearby vendors.
As the sun set, we wrapped up our day with dinner at The Crunkleton, a must-visit for anyone exploring Charlotte. Known for its meticulously crafted cocktails, we found ourselves seated at the bar, enjoying a fabulous meal and engaging conversation with the talented bartenders. Their mastery of mixology is an art form, making it a memorable dining experience. Don’t miss our detailed account of this vibrant spot here. You can read more about our Crunkleton experience here.
Our first day was filled with culture, culinary delights, and Southern hospitality. Charlotte warmly welcomed us, and we were eager for the adventures that awaited us.
Day 2: Lake Tranquility and Artistic Vibes
Our second day in Charlotte began with a light breakfast at Not Just Coffee, conveniently located in the heart of the city and perfect for grabbing a quick yet satisfying start to the day. With a steaming cup in hand, we set off for Lake Norman, a picturesque spot about a 30-minute Uber ride from Uptown Charlotte.

Once we arrived, we experienced the ultimate lake day. You can hire a boat and captain, allowing you to relax and enjoy the stunning views without hassle. Before heading out, consider stopping at Reid’s Fine Foods to assemble a gourmet picnic lunch. The deli offers many delicious options, including artisan sandwiches, cheeses, and salads, making it an ideal choice for a delightful meal on the water.
Whether you’re in the mood for a few hours of leisure or an entire day of escape, the lake offers a refreshing respite from the urban hustle.
Returning to Charlotte with plenty of time to spare, we wandered through NoDa, the city’s vibrant arts district. Known for its eclectic mix of galleries, mural-covered streets, and quirky shops, NoDa is a creative haven beckoning exploration. We enjoyed shopping and appreciated the vibrant street art that gives this neighborhood its unique character.
As evening approached, we headed to Supperland, where we were in for a treat. This popular dining spot delivers exceptional Southern-inspired cuisine in a charmingly renovated church, promising an unforgettable culinary experience. You can read more about our Supperland experience here.

Our day was a perfect blend of tranquility and creativity, capturing the essence of Charlotte’s diverse offerings and leaving us eager for Day 3.
Day 3: Cultural Immersion at Levine Center
Our final day in Charlotte was dedicated to immersing ourselves in the rich cultural landscape of the Levine Center for the Arts. We began with a delightful lunch at Amélie’s French Bakery & Café, conveniently located nearby. The café’s artisanal pastries and savory options were a perfect start, giving us the energy needed for a day of art and exploration.
The Levine Center for the Arts is a vibrant cultural hub home to several renowned institutions. Visitors can choose from an array of world-class museums, including:
- Mint Museum Uptown: Known for its American, contemporary, and European collections.
- Bechtler Museum of Modern Art: Featuring works from the mid-20th century.
- Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture: Celebrating African-American history and culture.
We opted to visit the Mint Museum, which offered an engaging experience. Despite being comprehensive, the museum is small enough to allow you to engage deeply with each display, taking time to absorb and contemplate the art.
A highlight of our visit was the “Communion of White Dresses” exhibition. This captivating showcase reimagines the tradition, symbolism, and representation of white dresses. It delves into their intersection with the generational culture of white dresses and the politics surrounding the black female body. This thought-provoking exhibit offered a unique perspective on cultural narratives and identity—a perfect example of the enriching and transformative experiences art can provide. We felt fortunate to catch this exhibition on its final day, adding a memorable close to our museum tour.
After the museum, we refueled with a quick snack at Halcyon, Flavors from the Earth, known for its artisan bites and fresh, local ingredients.
For our final dinner in Charlotte, we chose The King’s Kitchen, a low-key, welcoming spot known for its Southern comfort food and commitment to the community. It was an ideal choice for our last evening in the city with a laid-back atmosphere and no-fuss service. The menu’s soulful flavors provided a comforting end to our Charlotte adventure.
As we reflected on our three-day journey through Charlotte, it was clear that the city offered more than just a stopover. With its dynamic mix of history, creativity, and Southern hospitality, Charlotte stood out as a destination worth discovering over a full three-day exploration.
